At NEX, we’re rethinking how hospitals monitor and prevent infections. Our intelligent surveillance and clinical decision support platform equips healthcare teams with the insight to act before outbreaks happen.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are growing global threats. Clinicians today often operate without clear guidance—decisions frequently rely on delayed test results and manual tracking. We're changing that.

Spun out of mathematics and machine learning research at Imperial College London, NEX combines real-time hospital data, predictive modelling, and intuitive design to help hospitals detect and prevent infections earlier.

We’ve already validated our technology using over 500,000 patient records across:

  • Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (UK)

  • University Hospital of Geneva (Switzerland)

  • Phramongkutklao Hospital (Thailand – full deployment now live)

We’ve recently won an evaluation contract with Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (London), and are preparing to scale to multiple UK and international sites.

We're a small, fast-moving team—scientists, developers, and designers—motivated by real-world impact. And we’re now looking for an ML intern who’s excited to join us on this journey.

About the Role

About the Role

About the Role

You’ll be joining us as a Machine Learning Scientist (Intern), embedded directly into our R&D team. This is a hands-on role—ideal for a recent graduate or early-career technologist looking to apply their technical skills to high-impact health problems.

You'll contribute to the development of models used in real hospital settings, and gain experience across the full machine learning lifecycle—from data ingestion and feature engineering to model deployment and clinical integration.

This is a paid internship offering relocation support and the opportunity to transition into a full-time, salaried position with equity (UK-based). Interns who demonstrate strong performance and a good fit for the team will be offered either a full-time Machine Learning Engineer or Machine Learning Scientist position.

What You’ll Do

What You’ll Do

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and maintain machine learning models for early detection of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and bloodstream infections.

  • Contribute to research and implementation of novel techniques—particularly graph-based risk prediction models.

  • Prototype and test how LLMs (e.g., GPT-style models) could support syndromic surveillance and clinical recommendations.

  • Build interpretable models and help translate predictions into clinical insights that users can trust.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—clinicians, epidemiologists, designers, and engineers—to develop real-world solutions.

  • Contribute to backend infrastructure and MLOps pipelines, with opportunities to learn deployment, scaling, and monitoring best practices.

This is not a lab project—your work will feed directly into systems protecting real patients in real hospitals.

  • Need tasks to be fully scoped—we expect you to help shape the problem, not just solve it.

  • Prefer routine—we’re still figuring things out and value agility.

  • Aren’t interested in healthcare—our mission is at the core of everything we do.

  • Struggle with reliability—our systems can’t fail silently.

  • Aren’t excited by early-stage startups—this role will stretch you, and that’s the point.
